The Soap Thief

The Jewelry Fairy- Random acts of kindness story

My mother steals soaps.

Actually … it’s not officially stealing … more like … hoarding? Pilfering?

In a hotel-room-scenario, she will hide the soaps (and other lilliputian amenities), forcing the maid staff to then refresh the room’s supply when they arrive to find none in the room.

Which she will then hide again the next day.

And so it goes.

I wonder how many people do this?

If I’m being honest (and I am) I’d tell you … I’ve done it too. That feels terrible to admit.

But for the sake of transparency, there it is.

Me, I have this weird mix of “Yes, let’s!” and full-on repulsion whenever I encounter this. What an uncomfortable mix.

Which is why I’m coming clean.

One of my friends has this cute little setup for guests, which inspired me to create my own … I envision this pretty little basket with soap, shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer … for people who come to stay with me.

A fun little hotel experience.

Back to the current situation.

First I should mention: Momma takes these things not for herself but to give to others. Interesting twist, huh?

And … Since my mom has a habit of this, if you’re ever in a hotel room with her, be forewarned, you may very well not be able to wash your hands.

Cuz she’s already taken the tiny soaps and hidden the one we are actually using.

Overheard today at the Hampton Maid:

Me (needing soap)

Dad: “She’s hidden it”

Me: “In an undisclosed location”

Dad: (to momma) “Will you at least tell her where it is, in case anything happens to you?”

At least we can laugh about it.

So … Monday morning, my love-bomb will be for the ladies who clean the room we’ve been staying in. They come in cheerfully each day, riding on these adorable little cleaning-lady golf-carts.

Monday morning, I will put a Jewelry Fairy bag in each cart.

It’s been so lovely staying there while our heat and power, cable and everything-else has been down. I’m so appreciative of them! Thank you, ladies!
